ResumoThis work proposes a new class of maps, the scintillation probability maps for scintillation awareness. These maps are better than standard scintillation index maps to check if satellite-receiver GPS links can be affected by strong ionospheric scintillation (S4 index above 0.70), causing loss-of-lock or positioning error. Scintillation index maps covering the globe or a region yield the average of the amplitude scintillation index S4 measured along the line-of-sight of each link, thus losing directional information. The new probability maps can be derived from any standard scintillation index maps, providing for every grid point a probability of a receiver undergoing scintillation. Each hypothetical receiver is assumed as locking up on all satellites in its vicinity, each one with a S4 value obtained from the scintillation map. The probability at any grid point is then simply given by the ratio of neighboring satellite links with strong scintillation and the total number of neighboring satellite links. In this way, elevation and azimuthal angles of the line-of-sight satellite-receiver are taken into account for the hypothetical receiver at any grid point. Each GPS satellite position can be calculated for each receiver using the available IGS ephemeris data describing the satellite orbits. In order to validate the probability maps, a true probability is calculated for every actual GPS receiver retrieving the S4 values of nearby satellite links obtained from the positions of the in-range GPS satellites with elevation angle higher than 30°. The innovative scintillation probability maps consider the influence of neighboring scintillation occurrences, providing to GPS users a better insight about the possibility of being affected by strong scintillation near or at their position. These new maps were successfully evaluated using real S4 data.
